If you are in this area on holiday, there
are a number of facilities available to
play your favourite sport. The district
has a number of golf courses, all set in
beautiful surroundings. The bigger settlements
have public swimming pools, although some
only operate in the summer months. A number
of courts are available for people wanting
to play tennis or squash to burn up some
energy. There are professional fitness centres
that offer aerobics, weights, yoga and a
number of other structured programs to keep
you fit or to burn off extra energy.
For people interested in the outdoors, the
adventure and
nature sections
of this site offer a number of great sporting
recreations.
The main team sports in New Zealand include
rugby, cricket and netball. If you are interested
in watching team sports, you will find local
clubs playing games most weekends. The Rangitikei
also has a strong horse polo club. Of course,
there are many other sporting opportunities
around Rangitikei. If there is a sport that
you would like to do while visiting our
region please drop
us a line and we can let you know what
is available.
Golf The Rangitikei is a great place
to explore some of New Zealand's fine country
golf courses. These offer a relaxed golfing
experience, with few people and beautiful
surroundings.
Golf courses in the Rangitikei
include Waiouru, the highest 18 hole course
in New Zeland, and Taihape, with the notorious
No. 12, (rated by Jack Nicklaus as one of
the finest natural par 3 holes in the world).
Situated just north of Hunterville is Rangatira,
perhaps New Zealand's most picturesque course.
Marton, Hawkestone and Bulls, (Rangitikei
Golf Club), all have fine courses at the
southern end of the district.
Six of the local courses are full 18-hole
country courses, of between 5km and 6km
in length. The seventh course, at River
Valley, is a fun 9 hole pitch and putt.
A novel golf challenge, is the hole in one
at High Time Bungy. Here you get to go for
that one in a million shot, lob a ball over
the Rangitikei River, and if successful,
win a large cash prize.
All of the courses are available to the
casual visitor on payment of a small green
fee, (between $10 and $15). So, whether
you're a keen regular player, or a novice
wishing to have a few hits in beautiful
uncrowded surroundings, it would pay to
pack or hire a set of golf clubs when visiting
the Rangitikei.
